Fall 2024

Kansas Association of Mappers

Volume 38, #3

This edition of Metes and Bounds is packed with new information about the 2024 KAM Conference and other work happening across Kansas!

What’s new this year at the KAM conference?

We are looking forward to seeing everyone at #kam2024 in Lawrence very soon! While our schedule is largely the same as always, we’ve got a few changes that we want everyone to know.

Dinner on Wednesday evening is on your own. To give everyone sufficient time to either go out or order food, we shortened the afternoon schedule of presentations. We’ve put together a Story Map called Where should I go for dinner in Lawrence? that will help take the mystery out of where to go.

Be sure to return for evening festivities on Wednesday evening because we have prizes to be won! Exhibitors will have a limited number of free raffle tickets for the first visitors to their booths, so late arrivals will miss out. Otherwise, you can play one of several games (including indoor putt putt) to win raffle tickets. We’ve got gift cards, a beautiful Kansas cutting board, Yeti mugs, and more to raffle off at the end of the evening!

Just like any good mystery, the charity raffle has a twist this year. In addition to being able to buy raffle tickets, you can also earn them by donating pet supplies! Top needs for the Lawrence Humane Society’s Crisis Pet Retention Fund are wet and dry dog and cat food and cat litter. Every item you donate earns one raffle ticket, and large bags earn 10 tickets! Any brand or size works, including open bags.

On Thursday night, dress for the 1980s! Whether you channel your inner Madonna or bust out your old Frankie Says Relax t-shirt, we want you to arrive in style.

We encourage you to visit the KAM website for all the conference details! If you have questions, email us at kamappers@gmail.com

2024 NG911 Statewide Imagery - Call for QA Volunteers

The first block of 2024 NG911 imagery has been released for QA!  The imagery is organized statewide into 8 regional blocks that are broken up into individual county QA zones.  The imagery is being processed and will be released by QA blocks over the next few months.  Once the statewide imagery has been reviewed and Surdex has made the necessary corrections, the imagery will be released for public consumption through the DASC Geoportal Hub sometime in early 2025.

We need your help!  Our vendor, Surdex, has an easy-to-use browser-based QA interface.  In 2021 we had over 50 volunteer imagery QA inspectors across the state so let's try to surpass that number for 2024!   If you would like to sign up to be a volunteer, please fill out the survey using the link below. County QA zone assignment preference will be given to local county or city staff.  The survey is revised periodically as volunteers claim counties for QA.

Spatial Data Conflation and Transportation Safety

Wenjun Yang, PhD

Abstract (Link to Full Article Below)

Transportation safety encompasses measures and practices aimed at reducing the risk of fatalities and injuries due to traffic accidents. Safety data analysis plays a critical role in predicting and preventing accidents, improving infrastructure and design. This analytical process is primarily based on gathering crash data and the relevant information including drivers’ situation, road and environmental conditions, and other human factors. To create a holistic view of safety factors, data conflation is widely used in transportation safety analysis, involving merging and integrating various datasets to create an accurate and comprehensive representation of transportation safety data.

The present study will investigate the comprehensive workflow of conflation in crash data analysis. The workflow comprises four main steps: data pre-processing, matching, integration, and validation of the conflated result. The conflation creates a combined dataset with higher quality and richer information, aiming to enhance the use of GIS in transportation safety and promote the visualization of safety data for the public.
