Mylar Map Retention/Storage

    What has everyone done with their mylar maps? Mine are hanging in a huge steel cabinet that takes up way too much space. I know the mylars are considered a permanent record. But can they be scanned and then destroyed? Do you have them stored differently? Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    I was told that if I scanned the mylars then they could be destroyed. That's what I did with the inked parcel layer mylars. The aerial image mylars were scanned but I've put them in a couple of drawers in a flat map cabinet.
