Job Description

Johnson County Department of Technology and Innovation (DTI) is seeking a dynamic individual with a diverse skillset as it relates to data science and analytics with the aptitude to execute new technologies and data projects. The GIS Project Analyst position is assigned to the AIMS (Automated Information Mapping System) unit within Enterprise Services of DTI, for support of GIS, mapping, and data analysis functions at the County.  This position is eligible for a hybrid work assignment.  The position is responsible for the following:

  • Develop and oversee a diverse variety of data analysis and geographic information technology efforts of various size, scope, and complexity and communicates with technical and non-technical audiences. Leads the analysis, planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of key projects to accomplish goals.
  • Schedule events, programs, and activities as well as coordinating the work of others to complete projects.
  • Collaborates with internal/external customers, vendors, and other technology staff to ensure efficient use of spatial and non-spatial data resources to achieve project objectives by establishing and reviewing plans, schedules, resources, budgets, and priorities.
  • Work to develop and market products that meet business needs of our partners and provide outreach and training to facilitate adoption. Research new technology and customer needs and interprets product changes and presents information to management and technical leads.
  • Demonstrates expertise using technology tools and software for business intelligence and/or statistical data analysis.
  • Leads and conducts analytical research and collects data. Transforms data into meaningful end-user information using a variety of analytical tools including but not limited to Tableau, ArcGIS, FME, Python, SQL Server, etc.
  • Creates, reviews, and maintains documentation related to data and software use/support including procedures, processes, and metadata. Manages software implementations, user groups, and user accounts (AGO/Tableau).
  • Leads and/or trains analytical procedures to others; motivates, develops, and directs co-workers; mentors the work of lower-level data analysis, providing work counseling, guidance, and training.

Candidate must be able to lead and coordinate multi-agency projects and have the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.  The preferred candidate will have extensive professional experience with Databases (Microsoft SQL Server), GIS software (ESRI suite-ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, ArcServer, ArcGIS Portal/Online), ETL software (FME), and/or business intelligence/analytics software (Tableau) in a Windows environment.  In addition, candidate should have practical experience providing solutions relative to data and GIS and an understanding of the functions of County government.

Job Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in the following field(s) of study: geography, data analysis, statistics, engineering, mathematics, computer science, or relevant field of study and seven (7) years of experience using GIS or other data analysis software.  

Experience can substitute for education.  Education can substitute for experience.

Candidate must be able to successfully complete background screenings and reference checks. 

Physical, Environmental, and Special Working Conditions:
All County employees may be called upon to assist other departments/agencies in a declared emergency situation.
