    Are there source on the web to make maps look good.

    Something to explain Text Style, Color, Layout, line type, etc.

    I took the on-line instructor led Designing Maps class a couple months ago.  Really good 2 day class.

    one good book every serious cartographer should read is "How to Lie with Maps" by Mark Monmonier. 

    I took some Adobe InDesign courses at a local community college, and through that software training learned a lot about general graphic design, including stuff like typography, leading, kerning, tracking, RGB vs CMYK, all things that translate directly into good cartographic design.
