Field Data Collection from Start to Finish
Instructor: Amy Roust, GISP, Kansas Department of Health and Environment
9 am to 4 pm, Tuesday, October 18, 2022

Learn how to create and execute a field data collection project from start to finish. This one-day workshop will be split into a morning and afternoon session:

  • 9 am to 12 noon: Using ArcGIS Online, each student will create a Field Maps project using ArcGIS Online, the new Map Viewer, and Smart Forms. Students may use their own ArcGIS Online accounts if they wish so that they have the project for future reference. Once we are prepared to collect data via the software, we'll turn our attention to pairing mobile devices with Trimble GPS units. Scott Smith from Seiler Instruments will discuss best practices for using external GPS receivers in the field.
  • 1 to 4 pm: In the afternoon session, we will collect point data for each headstone in Ashland Cemetery near Manhattan. Time permitting, we will return to the conference hotel to work on data entry and discuss options for creating dashboards and maps for public use.

Participants must* provide for their personal use:

  • A smart phone with two free apps already installed: Esri’s Field Maps and Trimble Mobile Manager. Both apps are available in Google Play or the Apple Store.
  • A laptop for data editing. You will either need ArcGIS Pro installed or access to the internet so that you can do data editing via ArcGIS Online.  (You may make advance arrangements with KAM to borrow a laptop).
  • Appropriate clothing for field work. Be mindful of the forecast. We will only cancel the field trip portion if there is severe weather (e.g. storms that include lightning or heavy snow). While a gray, rainy day is not ideal for GPS data collection, we can make it work. Plan to bring your rain gear if necessary!

Trimble GPS receivers will be provided for use during the class, courtesy of Seiler Instruments.

* If you are unable to provide one or more items on this list, please reach out to us at kamappers@gmail.com. We will attempt to make arrangements for you to borrow what you need.

Cost:
Half day (morning or afternoon session only): $75 KAM Members / $125 Non-KAM Members
Full day (both morning and afternoon sessions):
$125 KAM Members / $175 Non-KAM Members
